CTI1(AW) USN (Ret.)
My dad was a Plank Owner (GMG1 Jesse W. Pierce) on the W.H. Standley and I heard many, many sea stories about the ship and crew.
I also made 2 WESTPAC cruises aboard USS Constellation, CV-64, in 77 and 78 with the Standley along for the ride (Out there on the horizon, where a 'Small Boy' belongs).
Despite being boarded out with a 100% medical disability, I have to say that I truly loved being in the Navy, and look back on that time as the most significant in my life, and realize now that the W.H.S. was a big part of that.

Served onboard August 1993 - January 1994 as a seaman, now a BMCS with 21 years. Has anyone ever noticed Tom Cruise is wearing a CG-32 patch on his flight jacket in "Top Gun"?

Served on board from Sept. 70 till Jan. 74. Many great memories on this part of my life. Hated to see her retired like she was, deserved better than to be used for target practice and sunk.

Went aboard in 1968 just before departing for Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam. Left ship May 10, 1970. Was in 3rd division. Seems like a lifetime ago. Hope the best for the crew. What an adventure.
